Getting Throughdialectical Behavioral Training

This strategy is dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that was specially developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD) but which found use as treatment for mental illnesses. Pioneering research has been carried out over the last decade on mentalization and the promotion of mentalizing capacity - the ability to interpret the behavior of oneself and others as based on intentional mental states, such as needs, desires, feelings, and beliefs. Luckily, one of the two individuals specialized in something called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which focuses on changing a history of behaviors and patterns through cognitive training. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) provides clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in.

You can regulate your emotions and better respond to distress through dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training. Dialectical behavior therapy emotional regulation skills have proven to be especially effective in people struggling with self-harm and other self-destructive, maladaptive behavior.

What Are DBT Skills?

Though DBT can seem complicated at first glance, DBT skills training is essentially composed of four modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Together, these skills teach patients how to recognize and honor their emotions, regulate emotional intensity, and respond to them without the use of maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Today, we will be taking a look at emotion regulation in DBT.

What Is Emotion Regulation?

Emotion regulation skills teach patients how to manage negative and overwhelming emotions while also increasing positive emotions. The goals of emotion regulation are to help you identify and understand the purpose of your emotions, decrease emotional vulnerability, and reduce emotional suffering.

There are several skills within this module, many of which overlap in their goals. For simplicity's sake, we will categorize these skills according to the goal with which they best correspond.

Understand and Identify Emotions

The key to emotion regulation is understanding that emotions are not 'bad.' They help motivate and organize action, communicate with others, and communicate to ourselves. This skill addresses myths about emotions, such as 'My emotions are who I am' or 'There is a right way to feel in every situation.' It also makes the distinction between primary emotions (initial reactions to an experience) versus secondary emotions (reactions to one's thoughts or feelings about an experience) and emphasizes the importance of naming both.

In an effort to understand and identify your emotions, you start by reviewing more descriptions labels for emotions, the prompting events that precede an emotion, interpretations of those events that prompted the emotion, expressions, and actions associated with the emotion, and their after-effects.

Decrease Emotional Vulnerability

'ABC' Skills

  • Accumulate positive emotions. In the short-term, do incorporate pleasant activities into your day. In the long-term, create goals and step-by-step plans for meeting those goals in order to build an overall more positive life.
  • Build mastery. Do things that make you feel competent and effective. This will help you combat feelings of helplessness.
  • Cope ahead of time. Rehearse a plan beforehand to cope with upcoming emotional situations. Describe the situation and your potential reactions, know which skills you will use, and visualize yourself coping effectively.

'PLEASE' Skills

  • Physical illness -- Pay attention to your health and get regular check-ups.
  • Eat balanced meals.
  • Avoid mood-altering substances.
  • Balance sleep.
  • Exercise.

Reduce Emotional Suffering

'Check the Facts' and 'Opposite Action'

Evaluate if an emotional reaction fits the facts of the situation. If if you find that it does, use problem-solving skills to come up with a solution to the situation, or leave the situation if appropriate.

If if you find that the emotional reaction does not fit, take 'opposite action' by engaging in behaviors directly opposite to the behaviors you would typically use when experiencing the emotion.

These skills may sound vague if you are not familiar with DBT but it will become easier and more natural with practice. Learning these emotion regulation skills will help you understand and make peace with your emotions and empower you to manage them effectively.

I had a tele-session with my therapist this morning, and we were talking about the troubles I've been having with emotional regulation. I have BP2 and PTSD from multiple traumas. And I'm in the same boat as a lot of you, everything is just so much more right now. Jumping from quarantine to protests, and life stuff more central to me, I have been stuck in this survival mode. That fight or flight, and I am a fighter. I've been finding myself going straight to anger lately, that emotional overload.. Or I'm completely shut off (I've had episodes of depersonalization come up, and I'm in that now as well) and shut down.

Dialectical behavior therapy or DBT is something she brought up to do some research into, we talked today about being in the Wisemind - where I'm flip flopping between over-rational and over-emotional. If you're struggling and can't afford help, I highly recommend The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook!

I was talking with my therapist yesterday about privilege and how I'm aware that I'm really fortunate to be able to afford a therapist and psychiatrist and meds and all the care involved with recovering from BPD.

I mentioned how I've seen some people post they couldn't afford treatment and how it makes me feel a little guilty sometimes. She pointed out to me that anyone can buy the same workbook I'm working through on Amazon (I spent $15 I think) and that it was created as a self help tool. I'm working through it guided by my therapist, but all of the tools and techniques are really just for your own use.

It's been remarkable in helping me understand and then process the intense emotions I feel. I still feel them, they haven't disappeared. But instead of short circuiting and spiraling out of control or bursting into anger, I'm finding mechanisms to help cope and move past the emotional response.

Anyone have experience with DBT skills training? (Dialectical Behavior Therapy )

I had a friend recommend the book/course for DBT skills training. I didn't think about it for a bit because it originated as a course for Severe borderline personality cases before they realized it works for emotional flashbacks, so I didn't think it'd be useful for me.

Collecting mental health resources is kind of my hobby though, and I had ordered the book at the time to check out when I could. then promptly forgot about it. This week I picked it up out of boredom, and have fallen in love with the handouts for the course. They are like worksheets for troubleshooting emotions!

Apparently it's a group course and I'm looking forward to finding one when we're allowed out of our houses again.

My girlfriend and I fight almost everyday, and it's all my fault.

I love my girlfriend so much, that every time she says she's ugly and full of flaws, I'd get upset and say that her flaws make her whole being, and I absolutely love everything about her. She's practically an angel, and I think about her everyday. I guess that's where the problem begins.

There will be days when I'd be so in love with her, that I feel like the happiest and luckiest person in the world, and I admire her so much as if she's a goddess. Then there will be days when I'd start to think that she hates me, that she's probably cheating on me, that she's probably just pretending to be in love with me, or that she's using me for something. I would proceed to have a breakdown and get mad at her. She would always get confused and ask me, 'What did I do?' That would always be her question every time we fight. 'I don't know what I did,' she would say. 'What are you talking about?'
